Monkey and Trouble

Story summary

A poor young woman, living on the island of Haiti, would once a year sell honey at a market and buy herself a rare treat with the proceeds. One year, a monkey sees her trip and spill all of her honey. Sighing she exclaims ‘Papa God. You give us so much trouble’. The monkey feasts on the spilt honey and wonders where he might get more but doesn’t know its name. Thinking back to the young woman’s exclamation, he assumes it’s called trouble and seeks out Papa God to ask for some. Papa God obliges and gives him a sack full of dogs which chase him, giving him no end of trouble. Papa God makes a tree grow for monkey to cower in.
